Should there be a change in law to protect sex workers?
Change in law urged to protect sex workers
(STANDARD) 03/18 Tuesday 05:30AM
Sex workers should be allowed to operate in groups instead of in the current "one-person brothel" arrangement, a concern group said yesterday.
Zi Teng executive Elaine Lam Yee-ling said without an amendment to the law prostitutes would be at great risk.
"The current law says prostitution is not illegal. But if two prostitutes work in the same building it constitutes `keeping a vice establishment,"' she said.
Under the existing law, vice establishments are described as premises used mainly for prostitution by two or more persons.
Lam said representatives of the group will march to the Wan Chai police headquarters at 11.30am today to put forward its demands.
Of an estimated 200,000 sex workers in Hong Kong, about 2,000 to 3,000 operate under the "one-person brothel" system, she said.
The prostitutes also cannot employ security guards or anyone to protect them because those employed would be seen as "living off the earnings of the prostitution of others."

Since the social value of the sexual worker is pretty low,
the police seldom concerns about them even they are being treated badly.
I feel like those sexual worker seldom being treated fairly whenever comes into any argument.
Especially, the recent murdering cases reflected the crisis of the security of the sexual industry,
by considering those sexual workers as normal human beings, we should have no doubt to support it.
However, how to be changed and how it can be changed would be a tough issue.

The government always hesitates to protect the rights of sex workers as they fear that the public would censure them for encouraging prostitution. However, sex workers have their human rights and should be protected. They should not be discriminated due to their occupation. Although the murder in the case has been caught, the government should start changing the laws in order to avoid similar tragedies happening again. Besides, I believe this would not encourage prostitution if the change of law is associated with an adequate public education system.
